Bad News Day

September 13, 2007

Gentry had his one year checkup today and it was not so good. The normal stuff is fine, he’s 24.5lbs, 30.5in, walking, talking and the like, but his egg allergy is a real problem. Between his egg allergy and Grey’s peanut allergy our Dr. said we should probably always carry and Epi-pen (scary)!!! She also said because of his exczema he shouldn’t be drinking milk so I should just continue to nurse him for anywhere up to the next year. Also his hemoglobin levels are supposed to be 11 and he tested at 7.5 so I have to take him to the hospital and have blood drawn. Now how am I supposed to solve and anemia problem and a vitamin D deficiency when the child can’t have milk or eggs. She said soy milk was probably the best alternative, but that worries me because soy and peanuts are both legumes (this doesn’t worry Micah). So we probably won’t try soy until we get the epi-pen. I could go on but you get it.

Please remember that today is Logan’s heart surgery so say a little prayer for him.

coming from someone with thalassemia (which basically means that I am permenantly anemic…this includes my entire childhood) may I offer one tiny piece of advice here…do anything you can to get Gentry’s iron up with food or in other natural ways. You can give him supplements but you have never seen constipation like a child on iron supplements! I didn’t remember this b/c I was only on supplements for a very short time but my mother remembers all too well that my system was VERY messed up!
