Harsh Reality

September 30, 2008 · 6 Comments

I think we are all struggling with the election. We’re sick of the bitterness between parties, the hopelessness of the economy, and unanswered questions when it comes to the war. But what I want to vomit over is the idea that Obama is for the little guy. That he won’t tax anyone making less than $250,000, that he just gonna stick it to John Doe rich guy and let the rest of us ride his money train to the bank…WRONG!

This is completely selfish, but I consider my family to be an average middle class family, I want you to think about what would happen to us if he got elected.

Micah makes good money and will make better when he get better when he get’s his Phd, our tax bracket under Obama would require us to pay around $21,000 in taxes. We would have two choices, I could go back to work as someones assistant/sec and make that much (but we’d still have to cover the cost of daycare). Even though we have made many personal sacrifices for me to stay home with them. But hey, he’s helping the little guy, right? He’s trying to make sure parents can raise their children the way they want, and have money to send them to college, and afford retirement. Well news for you buddy, we already had that covered.

Why not just sell our house and lower our expenses??? Well, unlike all the other idiots over their heads we downsized 3 years ago and have a $600/mo mortgage (any lower and we’re in a doublewide). Oh and by the way, if we decide to sell our house we would have to pay 28% to the gov’t. Well great… that suck’s in my opinion, after giving 6% to a realtor, and paying all the loan processing fees to get into a new house we’ll only have enough left over to buy paint for the pad.

Now what about my parents who both own their own businesses,a family run auto supply and my mom’s naturopath office, with all the new business taxes Obama wants to put into place at least one of them if not both would go down in flames. Oh and to top it off they own a home that has more than 2400 sqft so they’re gonna get a tax for that. But so what that they have 4 children + spouses, 7 grandchildren (and more to come) that they raised and shelter for the holidays, they must be rich greedy bastards to live in a house that large, so tax them or force them to sell.  So they could sell their house (but who would buy it with a property with extra taxes) and pay 28% profit to the gov’t (and what profit will there be with the deflated value). They could afford to buy a small townhouse and they wouldn’t ever say they were above working any odd job to pay the bills, but with my parents nearing their 60’s I wish better for them. The good news is that after Obama’s done with them we won’t have to worry about paying his inheritance tax.

I know we are all think the top financial tier get out of a lot of taxes but taxation just isn’t the cure.

“We contend that for a nation to try to tax itself into prosperity is like a man standing in a bucket and trying to lift himself up by the handle”

                                                                                      -Winston Churchill

“For every benefit you receive a tax is levied.”

                                                                                     -Ralph Waldo Emerson

“The fundamental class division in any society is not between rich and poor, or between farmers and city dwellers, but between tax payers and tax consumers”

                                                                                     -David Boaz

If Obama get’s elected I can say goodbye to my American dream (for at least 4 years + recovery time), because we won’t get to carry out our very carefully laid plan to stay at home and personally raise our children, and take care of our own retirement, and pay for our own kids to go to college. But at least he was honest when he said he wanted to bring “change”.

This morning Micah was getting Grey ready for school and during their normal bathroom routine Grey anounced that he had to poop. After straining for a few minutes he looked at Micah in awe and said…

Can you remember the last time you felt that much excitement during a potty break???

I’m gonna do it

September 5, 2008 · 1 Comment

I’m gonna go there, with all the other millions of opinionated bloggers, I’m going to talk about the election.

I went to my doctor’s appt. today and had a wonderful 45 min. conversation on politics and religion. I will preface this by saying my doctor is a woman and she is Muslim. She is the most wonderful doctor and we’ve had many conversations over the years about these topics and it’s fun to bounce ideas off each other knowing that we come from different (but always surprisingly similar) points of view.

I was really surprised the hear that she was torn on who she would vote for, she liked both of them for different reasons. She said her mind got made up by looking at the VP’s. And we both agreed that we are pretty sick of the whole shebang. While the conventions have been interesting, I hate that they are trying to fire up their base (hello! they’re already voting for you), I hate the chanting crowds, and especially the inbetween speech commentaries.  I know I’m not the only one feeling this way.

So I bring to you my silver lining approach. What’s that you say: It brings to mind that no matter who wins some good will be done.

McCain/Palin: He brings to the table extreme amounts of warfare knowledge and compassion, considering we are at war this could be helpful. He has a long standing bi-partisan record that might get congress out of a rut.

Obama/Biden: He might help communities (Like the Muslim) feel like they no longer have to stay under the radar.

NO MATTER WHAT: Let’s remember that we’ve never had a woman or multi-culteral person in leadership of our country. So no matter who wins we should feel proud that our country (at least parts of it) are progressing.
